Bridging the Digital Divide: Policy Proposals to Increase Broadband Access for All

THE NEWDEAL FORUM BROADBAND TASK FORCE | FEBRUARY 2022

In partnership with Education SuperHighway, #OaklandUndivided has piloted a replicable model of providing free WiFi to disconnected students and low-income tenants in five low-income apartment buildings. The initiative involves installing and maintaining a single WiFi network for the entire building, similar to a hotel, at a low monthly cost for the landlord and no cost to the residents.

Additionally, we’re establishing broadband adoption hubs to provide one-on-one support and enrollment assistance programs necessary to sign up for the apartment WiFi and other available resources, including the Affordable Connectivity Program. The goal is to connect 90% of Oakland’s 36,000 unconnected households within the next five years.

Check out the full report to learn more about our work (page 9) as well as other policy proposals across the nation that are working to increase broadband access for all.

Interested in getting involved? Help spread the word about the Affordable Connectivity Program, which provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward internet service for eligible households. Visit www.educationsuperhighway.org/acpbenefit to learn more.
